Niagara
County: A Bicentennial History With Niagara County’s bicentennial fast approaching in 2008, the History Center and the Niagara County Municipal Historians have come together to produce, “Niagara County: A Bicentennial History.” This remarkable new heritage publication was written by a team of authors and contributors including historians from each of the county’s 15 cities, towns and villages, as well as the Niagara County Historian’s office, Tuscarora Nation, Niagara County Sheriff’s Department and The Niagara County Historical Society. The History Center is spearheading sales of this hard-covered bicentennial history that contains over 200 pages and three hundred high quality photographs that further enhance the story told in the accompanying text. These photographs have been gleaned from both private and public collections, many of which have never been published before. The resulting heirloom publication is a book that will stand the test of time that you can proudly display in your home. $29.95

The IRC Railway Depot at Transit & West Main Street, serviced the Buffalo-Lockport Railway as an interurban run that opened in 1898 and discontinued passenger service in 1937. In its heyday, cars left Lockport every 30 minutes. In 1962, the building was converted to a laundry and auto parts dealer. The building is now completely removed and a Walgreen’s drugstore fills the site. $18.00 + $4.00 S&H

The Crystal located at the corner of Cottage and Buffalo Street was a local landmark located in the historic Jackson Building. The operator, “Jim” Shumis was famous for his homemade candy and ice cream. Next door was the Chop House, operated by Jake Stoll, which served hot roast beef sandwiches and liquid refreshments. The buildings were removed in the 1960s and the property is currently home to Friendly’s Restaurant. $18.00 + $4.00 S&H

The Lockport High School, located on East Avenue near the Palace Theater, built in 1890-91, was first called the New Union School. By 1919, several additions and alterations were needed that took many years to complete. A library was added to the front of the building in 1935 and a familiar turret was removed. After decades of continuous use, the building was closed in 1955 and students were transferred to the new High School on Locust Street Extension. $18.00 + $4.00 S&H

Williams Brothers Department Store had its beginning in 1868 when J. E. Lerch and William A. Williams opened a small dry good store in Lockport. In 1879, Williams formed a partnership with his brother, Albert E. Williams and the business was renamed Williams Brothers. A local landmark, the business actually occupied three different sites in its nearly 100 year history. Its final location in 1899; was on the south side of Main Street between Pine and Locust Street. The business was razed for Urban Renewal in the 1970s. $18.00 + $4.00 S&H
